OLPC is planned to grant free of charge to manufacturers the right to release of cheap notebooks

The noncommercial organisation OLPC initiating on distribution “student’s notebooks” in cost of $100, has anticipated in due time netbooks appearance. The problem consists that OLPC it was not possible to lower cost price XO to the comprehensible sum, and low models extended to a commercial basis netbooks still could be bought for $150-170. Somewhat, idea OLPC has been realised in a commercial field though the difference in “the question price” was not such considerable.

CNet has told about the new initiative of head OLPC of Nicholas Negroponte. He plans to develop standard design of “a cheap student’s notebook” next generation, and to give a package of the designer documentation to interested manufacturers free of charge. Probably, such circuit of advancement of cheap notebooks will allow to lower, at last, the cost price for the score of effect of mass production. Negroponte hopes that in three years every month it will be released on 5-6 million such notebooks. Now all over the world it is maintained no more a half-million of devices of this type. Software of notebooks OLPC has already moved to principles of “an open code” - Sugar OS development is charged volunteers from among supporters of the project who work free of charge. Now similar principles OLPC is gathered to use by hardware production cheap notebooks.
